It’s the early 1980s in Los Angeles, where a brooding punk offshoot began to emerge known as death rock. It was different chan its punk predecessor, darker in sound and style. One of the pioneering bands to truly embody this sound and style was Ex-Voto.

Formed in 1982 by Larry Rainwater, Linda Patti and David Rhine, Ex-Voto set out to create a sound that deviated from the current mainstream. Combining drum machines and keyboards with heavy guitars and dance beats, Ex-Voto would become one of the prominent Los Angeles bands that would shape and influence the genre of death rock,

Nowadays, the term goth seems to be an all-encompassing term to describe all dark and related genres, with lines being blurred from darkwave to industrial. Goth has become quite the entangled and interchangeable web of terms, genres, and definitions that can be a bit confusing at times. However, what is not confusing is the distinct sound of death rock that came out of Los Angeles in the early 80s. ‘The sound that Ex-Voto has not only pioneered but perfected, with their iconic hit songs being a permanent fixture in clubs, past and present.

Es ist Anfang der 1980er Jahre in Los Angeles, wo ein grüblerischer Punk-Alekt auftauchte, der als Death Rock bekannt ist. Es war anders als sein Punk-Vorgänger, dunkler in Klang und Stil. Eine der Pionierbands, die diesen Sound und Stil wirklich verkörperte, war Ex-Voto.

Ex-Voto wurde 1982 von Larry Rainwater, Linda Patti und David Rhine gegründet und machte sich daran, einen Sound zu schaffen, der vom aktuellen Mainstream abwich. Durch die Kombination von Drum Machines und Keyboards mit schweren Gitarren und Dance-Beats wurde Ex-Voto zu einer der prominenten Bands aus Los Angeles, die das Genre des Death Rock prägen und beeinflussen würden.

Heutzutage scheint der Begriff Goth ein allumfassender Begriff zu sein, um alle dunklen und verwandten Genres zu beschreiben, wobei die Linien von Darkwave zu Industrial verschwommen werden. Goth ist zu einem verworrenen und austauschbaren Netz von Begriffen, Genres und Definitionen geworden, das manchmal etwas verwirrend sein kann. Was jedoch nicht verwirrend ist, ist der ausgeprägte Klang von Death Rock, der Anfang der 80er Jahre aus Los Angeles kam. “Der Sound, den Ex-Voto nicht nur vorangetrieben, sondern perfektioniert hat, wobei ihre ikonischen Hits eine feste Größe in Clubs sind, Vergangenheit und Gegenwart.
