INTERVIEW WITH
MARGOT DAY
Margot: I am witchy. I channel my music from nature, the cosmos, and the collective consciousness. The hope is to inspire others with Metamorph music so that together we can heal the planet and make a better world for ourselves and our children.
Margot: Metamorph began in 2016 after what I think of as a miracle healing, both spiritually and medically. I felt summoned again to make music. For the full story check out our “Metamorph Healing Documentary” on YouTube.
Can you tell us how this album has been received and a little about its creation? (We gave it 5/5)
Margot: Wow! Thank you. Amazing reviews have come pouring in! Over 20,000 Spotify streams of our title track “Kiss of the Witch”. Many Bandcamp downloads! And lots of Views of the music video. It’s been very gratifying. I feel heard, understood, and seen. I feel the love. Grateful. Our Album “Kiss of the Witch” dropped on the autumn equinox 2022 on all platforms: Spotify, Bandcamp, iTunes, Amazon, and Apple. And on YouTube, the title track “Kiss of the Witch” music video has a cult classic vibe. Filmed by Victoria Zolnoski – who has been my witchy favourite videographer for years. Included in the video is a cameo appearance from the well-known author and Witch Sali Crow. “Kiss of the Witch” is a Gothic love story where twin flames are reunited, love wins, and a magical kiss is meant to awaken us from this dystopian nightmare of our chaotic world, activating our superpowers, for a better future together for ourselves and the planet—produced by Cleopatra recording artist Erik Gustafson – the Metamorph alchemist. Erik also edited the music video. Deep in nature, I wrote and then record my voice and flute. Erik took my song skeletons and added synth textures and lush layers of beats and instruments. His production is as one reviewer said “flawless”. My daughter Julifer Day wrote some of the lyrics and sang on “Empress” and “Poison in the Air”. Her voice is honeyed and smoky and blends well with mine. “Kiss of the Witch” is full of lush darkly melodic song potions. I love our new album. With joy I dance and listen… on repeat…
Margot: I immerse myself in nature magic – all the secrets and answers are in nature. Let’s all listen to the earth, wind and rain, ocean, fairies, and mermaids, and let the other dimensions, portals and vortexes inspire us. I want to help others to connect with nature magic via Metamorph. For instance, for the song “Poison in the Air”, I was in the jungle, inspired by the HUGE Queen of the Night flower (her bloom is as big as my head). She shared her euphoric perfume with me while I wrote and recorded. This flower is a hallucinogen and poisonous for some and only blooms and releases her perfume at night – the perfect Goth flower (lol). There is also an undercurrent in my creative dream space, and in my writing, of the world’s troubles. I am hoping to be like a sieve and musically metamorphosize the world crises into well-being and love. If you look deep inside these lyrics, you will find many layers of both political commentary and spiritual symbolization… and revelation.
Margot: David Bowie would be my main influence. Sometimes I check out the latest “Electro-pop” “Alternative” or Goth releases to see what’s up.
Margot: Perhaps you’re referring to the “video reels” on IG, FB, and TikTok – with my tiny dog and me wearing my dark glasses, wild hair, and black hat – embracing the witchy “sunshine goth” vibe. Ironically, I keep the reels on my phone in a folder called “real Margot lol”. So, there is a little humour mixed in with the relaxed, dreamy me. I am an archetypal personification of myself. What does that mean? I take my deepest, truest self from this life and past lives and amplify this vision. So, yes this is the “real” me – a dreamy superhero witch.
Margot: I am a native new yorker and was an integral part of the 80’s NYC underground music scene while fronting the legendary Goth band “The Plague”. We released the Plague album “Naraka”. After the Plague, I met my twin flame, Kurtis Knight. We created a few musical projects together: SACRED, and Moss Circle, and we toured the USA together. Then came Metamorph. Metamorph released “Sigils & Spirals” in 2020, “Ether” in 2017, and “The 4 Elements” in 2017 and our featured the music videos “Daisy Logic” and the prophetic “Spelldance”. Metamorph tuning is A=432hz – nature’s frequency. Live concerts and festivals with Metamorph (and our tiny mascot Melody) in the US, Canada, Costa Rica, and Guatemala. Metamorph concerts are theatrical, magical, and danceable. Kurtis Knight and I performed as a duo, and a full band with drummer Joe Netzel, sword and belly dancer Rivqah Cas, Anomaly on Bass and Belly dancer Kitten Mapants. When 2020 hit, all the festivals and club concerts were cancelled, and I escaped temporarily to the jungle to create this new album, “Kiss of the Witch”.
As a child I sang and sang and sang. Strangely I sometimes sang in other tongues. At the age of 7, I started playing the flute and performing classical music. I never practised. I just played. Some called me a child prodigy. I was surrounded by creativity. My dad was an Artist who played the piano, and my mom was a modern dancer who also wrote. Then later I studied opera. I have a 3-octave vocal range and mostly perfect pitch. It’s always been way easier to play music than talk or do regular life chores. Music is my path. My destiny. My life.
Margot: We label Metamorph “Goth Pop with a Witchy Vibe”. For sure my roots and my vibe are Goth. Music is so personal and subjective. Perhaps its Alternative? Definitely some kind of Pop as my main forte is “catchy” melodies. And obviously some Punk and Rock and industrial too. And Electro – Pop. And Darkwave… You tell me?
Mike: I would agree with the mix and also add relaxing and dreamy too.
Margot: Absolutely! There are so many talented musicians and producers. I am open to collaborations and compilations. I’m utterly thrilled to have a remix from Spankthenun and Xrix SMack!(mindsswerve) on the “Kiss of the Witch” Album. I invite remixers to reach out. There might be a remix from Eva X and some other surprise talents in the next release.
Margot: The muse is singing in my ear again – I hear and feel the new songs coming– like the wind in a hurricane – unavoidable. These new songs are waiting to be recorded and captured and shared. I have started the first new song and will release more music in 2023 – with Erik Gustafson producing.
Margot: 2023- maybe Europe. Maybe the East Coast of the USA – Boston, NYC, Philly…. Still deciding…
Margot: Everything and Nothing. I mostly listen to the ocean and the rain and the birds. And then whatever is playing wherever I am. I don’t know where to start or where to end with this question. I like music that is fun. Or deep. Danceable. Melodic. ALL genres. Most of all, I love to find and listen to cutting-edge new music.
Margot: Nature is my inspiration. Nature is my teacher. Nature is my healer. Nature is my heart.
Margot: Metamorph is “music for morphing”. Inviting you to “become the witch, the alchemist, the dreamer, the phoenix…”.
Margot: Black (rolls eyes)
Margot: These are not really “hobbies” but more like lifestyle pleasures. Swimming with the mermaids. Dancing in the rain. Making jewelry with bones, clay and crystals. Eating strange tropical fruits and superfoods. Trying to read the future with Tarot cards and inviting guests to visit and make my food and snuggling Melody, the tiny Metamorph mascot and gardening with Kurtis – especially growing flowers. Finding thrift store treasures and sewing them into costumes. Going for walks in the jungle. lol making little “reels”……
Margot: The waterfall behind my house.
Margot: Dorian – its a weird tropical fruit that smells like blue cheese.
