It is sensual music that reels you in no matter who you are. The vocals are stunning, the melodies are just hypnotic, and more so with every beat.
I love this so much that I need to hear “Mantis 1” and cannot wait for “Mantis 3”. I hear so many bands/artists that are fantastic, and many stand out, and SINE is one of those that goes to the top on first listen.
What a perfect blend of melodies and vocals that takes you on a highly sensual dream-like adventure into music heaven.
If there’s heaven, this EP will play on the way there. If it is not, then I would be sorely disappointed.
The cover of The Gloves “Sex-Eye-Make-up” is such a fantastic version considering I was a big fan of The Glove. This is an excellent cove, and dare I say it, but personally, it improves on the original due to the stunning vocals.
This is SINE, a band that is going to do amazing things.

Austin, Texas artist, SINE, announce the release of their new 5 song EP, Mantis 2, the second in a trilogy, “Mantis 1, 2 & 3”. Mantis 2 will be released by Austin-based record label eMERGENCY heARTS with a street date of August 26, 2022
Mantis 1 and 2 were produced by SINE founder, Rona Rougeheart in collaboration with esteemed audio engineer Charles Godfrey at Scary American Studio in Austin, TX. Godfrey, in his two decade plus career, has been engineer/producer on over 75 recordings, including the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’, It’s Blitz! and Mosquito, The Black Angels Indigo Meadow, and notable work for…Trail of Dead, SWANS, among so many more.
Mantis 2 opens with a circus in the distance, swirling backwards into a blasting march that leads into a cutting, electronic bass-line. “Virtual Realitease” is the first track on Mantis 2. It sets the theme of the EP as a study of life going from real to virtually real and the pains of adapting to a life forced apart from one another.
The new EP also has a cover of The Glove’s song, “Sex-Eye-Make Up”. Rona Rougeheart tells us why she chose that song to do a rare SINE cover.
“The Cure is one of my all time favorite bands. When I was growing up, I loved Robert Smith and followed everything he did musically, which led me to Siouxie and the Banshees and The Glove. When I found out that The Glove was Robert Smith and Steve Severin of the Banshees, I had to get it! It’s still one of my favorite albums - the song “Sex-Eye-Make Up” is one of my favorites on the album, so it was a natural choice. I don’t usually do covers, but oddly enough, the only other SINE cover is of The Cure song, “Like Cockatoos”. I guess all roads lead to The Cure!”
In discussing the recording process, Rougeheart said, “I worked with producer Mark Pistel (Consolidated, Meat Beat Manifesto). He took my bare demo and added more instrumentation and those super cool, dreamy vibes you hear. When I heard our final mix, I felt like I wanted to cry tears of joy! I’ve imagined doing this cover for years, so it was an absolute thrill to have Mark help me with it.”
Mantis 2 is a ride into a virtual world of satire and dream-state realities that ends with a melancholic, piano and string piece called “Soundtrack of a Wasted Recovery”. The vocals are in a spoken-word style with lyrics that evoke the sadness, loneliness and feelings of inadequacy that we often get consumed with. It’s a touching track with hopes for change.
Rougeheart talks about the direction of the Mantis 1 and 2 EPs:
“I like to call the music on the Mantis EPs, “electronic boom”. I really love beats, deep bass and subs. I’m rooted in dark electronic dance music and industrial sounds, but as a drummer, I can’t deny that I’m more drum and bass oriented with my percussion background being the core foundation of the music I create.”

Mantis 1 und 2 wurden von SINE-Gründer Rona Rougeheart in Zusammenarbeit mit dem geschätzten Toningenieur Charles Godfrey im Scary American Studio in Austin, TX, produziert. Mantis 2 beginnt mit einem Zirkus in der Ferne, der rückwärts in einen Sprengmarsch wirbelt, der in eine schneidende, elektronische Basslinie führt. "Virtual Realitease" ist der erste Track auf Mantis 2. "The Cure ist eine meiner Lieblingsbands aller Zeiten. Als ich aufwuchs, liebte ich Robert Smith und verfolgte alles, was er musikalisch tat, was mich zu Siouxie und den Banshees und dem Handschuh führte. Bei der Diskussion über den Aufnahmeprozess sagte Rougeheart: "Ich habe mit Produzent Mark Pistel (Consolidated, Meat Beat Manifesto) zusammengearbeitet. Er nahm meine nackte Demo und fügte mehr Instrumentierung und diese super coolen, verträumten Vibes hinzu, die man hört. Als ich unseren letzten Mix hörte, hatte ich das Gefühl, dass ich Freudentränen weinen wollte! Ich habe mir vorgestellt, dieses Cover seit Jahren zu machen, also war es ein absoluter Nervenkitzel, Mark mir dabei helfen zu lassen.“
Mantis 2 ist eine Fahrt in eine virtuelle Welt der Satire und Traumzustandsrealitäten, die mit einem melancholischen, Klavier- und Streicherstück namens "Soundtrack of a Wasted Recovery" endet. Der Gesang ist in einem gesprochenen Wortstil mit Texten, die die Traurigkeit, Einsamkeit und Gefühle der Unzulänglichkeit hervorrufen, mit denen wir oft verzehrt werden. Es ist ein berührender Weg mit Hoffnungen auf Veränderung.
Rougeheart spricht über die Richtung der Mantis 1 und 2 EPs:
"Ich nenne die Musik auf den Mantis EPs gerne "elektronischen Boom". Ich liebe Beats, tiefe Bässe und Subs. Ich bin in dunkler elektronischer Tanzmusik und industriellen Klängen verwurzelt, aber als Schlagzeuger kann ich nicht leugnen, dass ich mehr auf Drum- und Bass ausgerichtet bin, wobei mein Percussion-Hintergrund die Kerngrundlage der Musik ist, die ich schaffe.“

SINE is an electronic band created and led by singer and drummer, Rona Rougeheart. She has stepped from behind the drum kit to create her own strong, sexy female fronted project that weaves beats with industrial noise and layers of booming bass and synths into a mix of jagged textures and dark, lush fusions with cutting lyrics and vocals.
RONA ROUGEHEART was born in New York, the youngest daughter of a Taiwanese mother and Irish father. She grew up as a military child, living all over the U.S. and in Okinawa, Japan. Her father was a musician who taught her how to play keys and guitar. It wasn’t until later, she decided to take up drums on her own. Early in her musical career, she played drums for multiple bands in Austin, TX, catching the eye of Gretsch Drums who, in 2012, gave her her first endorsement. Gibraltar hardware also added her to their roster and Roland electronics followed suit in 2019. In April, 2019, she landed a direct support slot for Peter Murphy in Orlando, FL for the 40th Anniversary of Bauhaus Ruby Tour with David J. The night seemed ill-fated when Peter was unable to perform, but was revitalized when she joined David J, Curse Mackey, Mark Gemini-Thwaite and Marc Slutsky for an impromptu performance of Bauhaus tunes. In 2021, SINE collaborated with Meat Beat Manifesto to release a new remix and video created by Rona and Jack Dangers. She also worked with legendary producer, Adrian Sherwood, on a SINE remix, which led to her working on new music with his daughter, Denise Sherwood. She continues to write new music and work on collaborations.
