There is even a western style cover of the Dolly Parton hit “Jolene”, and no it is not like the White Stripe’s version. This is a Mad Meg version. It is slower, but it is excellent. Hey, it even has throat singing in it.
The only way to understand this album is to listen to it.
Do not brush it aside. This is a good album, in fact, an excellent album.
DEMAND DIFFERNT
“Who Deserves Balloons and Medals?” asks the NYC-based punk crooner noir band Mad Meg in the title of their new release. The new record uses dark, ironic lyrics and theatrical musical performances to talk about social anxiety, the immigrant experience, ageing and recent cultural trends.
The album comprises 6 original songs and one unlikely Dolly Parton cover, which mashes up Americana with dub and Tuvan throat singing. The release is also accompanied by three music videos—one animated and two live-action—to be premiered in the weeks before the album release. “This record, on the one hand, is more mature than our previous ones, but on the other, is more absurd and playful. The darkness is there, but it’s darkness you can rock out to,” says Ilya Popenko, the band’s frontman.
Even though Beyond Repair is not the title song, it is the flagman of this album. Here’s how Ilya describes it: “Beyond Repair is a song sung by a machine that is no longer properly functioning. The machine begs its owner to throw it away and not feel obligated to keep it around, as it believes that the owner’s life will be better with a newer, better-functioning model. It’s a very festive song that is stylistically inspired by musical theatre.” The song Cenotaph No.8 echoes the plot of Beyond Repair in that the singer addresses a person of his romantic interest while listing all of his own shortcomings as reasons they can’t be together. “It’s a sing-along folk tune that features a choir of middle-aged white men,” Ilya says. Waiters is inspired by Ilya’s experience working in the hospitality industry, which employs many aspiring creatives. “The song Balloons and Medals was inspired by a New York City performance of the Blind Boys of Alabama, whose two founding members are both blind and in their 90s.” Says Daniel Veksler, the band’s guitarist.
Assembled and based in New York, the multicultural and hard-rocking band with overtones of Eastern European existential anguish has toured extensively in the countries of the former Soviet Bloc, and their tracks are in rotation on Mexico’s major radio stations. They shared the stage with such luminaries as Rasputina and Emir Kusturica and recorded a live album at a female prison in Lithuania, released in November 2019.
The leader of Mad Meg, poet, artist, filmmaker and photographer Ilya Popenko, is a towering and unpalatable figure whose zombie-like singing is accompanied by a morbidly fascinating performance style.
Here is how the band explain their style, which they refer to as punk crooner noir: “Punk is a general attitude toward society - one of personal sovereignty, an embodied admission of the impossibility of conforming to any herd. It also describes a motley style. Crooner is a masculine type of singing from the mid-20th century, encompassing irony, sensitivity, and good old moxie. Noir is an aesthetic in which the dark side is very prevalent.”
"Wer verdient Luftballons und Medaillen?" Fragt die in NYC ansässige Punk-Crooner-Noir-Band Mad Meg im Titel ihrer neuen Veröffentlichung. Die neue Platte verwendet dunkle, ironische Texte und theatralische musikalische Darbietungen, um über soziale Angst, die Erfahrung von Einwanderern, das Altern und die jüngsten kulturellen Trends zu sprechen.
Das Album besteht aus 6 Originalsongs und einem unwahrscheinlichen Dolly Parton-Cover, das Americana mit Dub- und Tuvan-Halsang vermischt. Auch wenn Beyond Repair nicht der Titelsong ist, ist es der Flagman dieses Albums. So beschreibt Ilya es: "Beyond Repair ist ein Lied, das von einer Maschine gesungen wird, die nicht mehr richtig funktioniert. Die Maschine bittet ihren Besitzer, sie wegzuwerfen und sich nicht verpflichtet zu fühlen, sie in der Nähe zu behalten, da sie glaubt, dass das Leben des Besitzers mit einem neueren, besser funktionierenden Modell besser sein wird. Es ist ein sehr festliches Lied, das stilistisch vom Musiktheater inspiriert ist". Das Lied Cenotaph No.8 spiegelt die Handlung von Beyond Repair wider, indem der Sänger eine Person seines romantischen Interesses anspricht und gleichzeitig alle seine eigenen Mängel als Gründe auflistet, warum sie nicht zusammen sein können. "Es ist eine Mitsing-Volksmelodie mit einem Chor von weißen Männern mittleren Alters", sagt Ilya. Waiters ist inspiriert von Ilyas Erfahrung in der Hotellerie, die viele aufstrebende Kreative beschäftigt. "Das Lied Balloons and Medals wurde von einer New Yorker Aufführung der Blind Boys of Alabama inspiriert, deren zwei Gründungsmitglieder beide blind und in ihren 90ern sind". Sagt Daniel Veksler, Gitarrist der Band.
Die multikulturelle und in New York ansässige multikulturelle und harte Rockband mit Untertönen osteuropäischer existenzieller Angst ist ausgiebig in den Ländern des ehemaligen Sowjetblocks gereist, und ihre Tracks sind auf Mexikos großen Radiosendern rotiert. Sie teilten sich die Bühne mit Persönlichkeiten wie Rasputina und Emir Kusturica und nahmen ein Live-Album in einem weiblichen Gefängnis in Litauen auf, das im November 2019 veröffentlicht wurde.
