What’s New at Darker Side of Music: A Guide to the Site’s Latest Upgrades

If you’ve been on Darker Side of Music lately, you might’ve noticed things feel a little different. Search actually finds what you’re looking for. Gig listings are easier to browse. There’s a newsletter now that doesn’t feel like spam. None of that happened by accident — behind the scenes, we’ve spent the last few months rebuilding the site from the ground up, piece by piece, with one goal: make it easier for you to find the music, news, and events you’re actually here for.

Here’s a rundown of what’s changed, and how it makes your time on the site better.

Finding Gigs Is Actually Easy Now

The Gig Guide has been rebuilt to make browsing tour dates and live shows genuinely painless. Whether you’re checking what’s coming through your city or scanning for a favourite band’s next tour, the listings are cleaner, more accurate, and updated far more regularly than before.

Search That Understands What You Mean

We’ve overhauled site search from the ground up. Type in a band name, a genre, or even a half-remembered article title, and the new search actually surfaces the right results — instead of the frustrating near-misses you might remember from before.

A Newsletter Worth Opening

Every Friday, we send out a newsletter that pulls together the week’s reviews, interviews, and news into one gothic-styled email — no clutter, no filler. If you haven’t signed up yet, it’s a good way to keep up without having to check the site every day.

“On This Day” — A Little Scene History, Daily

Ever wonder what happened in gothic, darkwave, industrial, or metal history on today’s date? We’ve added a section dedicated to exactly that — album releases, milestones, and moments from the scene’s past, refreshed daily.

An Artist Directory Worth Browsing

Our Artist Links directory has grown into a proper resource: browsable A–Z, filterable by genre, with direct links out to the artists’ own pages, socials, and music. It’s become one of the easiest ways to discover something new or track down a band you’ve heard mentioned but never looked up.

Faster Replies, Fewer Dropped Messages

If you’ve ever reached out to us — with a tip, a correction, a question — you’ll notice replies come faster and more reliably now. We rebuilt our contact system so nothing falls through the cracks.

Charts That Show You What’s Actually Trending

We’ve also launched proper charts — auto-updating rankings that track what’s getting the most attention on the site, complete with trend indicators so you can see what’s climbing and what’s new to the list. It’s a quick way to see what the scene’s paying attention to right now, without having to dig through every review.

A New Look, and the Vision Behind It

You’ll have noticed the new logo by now. It was inspired by Marianne, my partner in both Darker Side of Music and in life — and her fingerprints are all over far more than the visual refresh. Marianne’s background in creative media has been a driving force behind the site’s direction over the past year, including the decision to move away from generic, off-the-shelf plugins in favour of custom-built features designed specifically for this site and this audience. Everything from the new gig listings to the artist directory carries a bit of that thinking. I’m proud to have her alongside me, both on this project and beyond it.

Why It Matters

None of this is flashy for the sake of it. Every change has been about removing friction between you and the music — whether that’s finding a gig near you, discovering a new band, or just not missing a great review because the newsletter never showed up. There’s more coming, but this is where things stand today.

As always, thanks for reading — and if something’s still not working the way it should, let us know.
